Watch for Warning Signs of Diabetic Foot Problems
posted: Nov. 18, 2015.
Diabetes is a disease that affects almost 30 million children and adults. The feet of patients with diabetes are susceptible to serious medical conditions as a result of the disease. Even seemingly minor conditions, such as ingrown toenails or blisters can be a serious threat to a diabetic patient because the lack of circulation that accompanies the disease means healing is slow and infections are difficult to get under control. In recognition of National Diabetes Month, Southern Maryland Foot & Ankle wants to remind patients with diabetes to be on the lookout for these symptoms that may indicate the early signs of a foot problem:
- Any red spots, sores, blisters, or wounds
- Changes in the shape of your feet
- Overly dry or cracked skin on your feet
- Pain in your feet, legs, calves, thighs, or buttocks, especially during physical activity
- Temperature changes in your feet (cold or hot)
- Burning or tingling in your feet
- Loss of hair on your toes, feet, or lower legs
- A decreased ability to feel sensations or heat or cold in your feet
- Thickening of toenails and changes in nail color
If you notice any of these symptoms or anything unusual about your feet, make an appointment at either our Waldorf or Clinton office. Our board certified foot and ankle surgeon, Dr. Larry Hotchkiss, is your partner in preventive diabetic care. Developing a care regimen for your feet is very important. There are many easy things you can do such as, inspecting feet daily, getting properly fitting shoes, and keeping feet moisturized, that will result in fewer complications and healthier feet. Patients with diabetes should schedule regular check-ups with a podiatrist to prevent problems and also to ensure early treatment for issues that develop.
