Finding The Right Orthotics

Figure out what type of orthotic could improve the health and function of your feet.

Structural imbalances and injuries can make feet scream out in pain or make it difficult to move around and complete your daily tasks. If you find yourself dealing with sore, achy feet more often than not, perhaps our California, MD, podiatrists have recommended orthotics. Here’s what you should know about getting prescription orthotics from a qualified foot and ankle specialist,

What are orthotics?

Our California, MD, foot doctors will often recommend wearing orthotics if you have certain foot conditions or structural imbalances such as if you pronate or have flat feet. We can custom-make orthotics to fit the shape of your feet and to help improve your specific foot problems while standing, walking, or during physical activities.

What are the different types of prescription orthotics?

Custom orthotics can be made from rigid, semi-rigid, or soft material, depending on the issues you are dealing with. For example, rigid orthotics help to control joint and overall foot function while semi-rigid orthotics are used to help with balance (a popular choice for athletes) and soft orthotics absorb shock and take pressure off the feet (great for people with diabetic foot problems!).

Why not just purchase over-the-counter orthotics?

It might seem tempting to just grab a pair of premade orthotics from your local drugstore. After all, they certainly have a practical price point; however, these prefabricated orthotics come with a one-size-fits-all approach and don’t really address your individual foot needs. Since our California, MD, podiatry team only crafts orthotics specifically to fit your feet, they will provide better support, shock absorption, and comfort where you need it most. No over-the-counter equivalent will ever be able to do that.

Who can benefit from orthotics?

Since many people have some kind of structural imbalance in their feet, getting custom orthotics now could provide your feet with the support they need when standing or walking and may even stave off potential foot problems. Athletes find orthotics to be particularly helpful for cushioning and support when playing sports or running. There are a variety of foot and ankle conditions that can also be improved through orthotics. These conditions include,

  • Arthritis of the feet or ankle
  • Ankle instability
  • Bunions and hammertoes
  • Achilles tendonitis
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Knee pain
  • Flat feet
  • High arches
  • Diabetes
  • Metatarsalgia

If you want to find out how orthotics could improve your steps and make activities easier then turn to our Waldorf, Clinton, and California, MD, team here at Southern Maryland Foot & Ankle. We craft custom orthotics to fit every individual’s podiatric needs. Call us at (301) 843-9581, (301) 868-3899 or (301) 690-6044 to schedule an evaluation.
