Getting Rid of Pesky Nail Fungus

Toenail fungus is a common podiatric problem. Thick, yellowed nails are the presenting symptom, and of course, patients feel embarrassed about the appearance of their feet. At Southern Maryland Foot & Ankle in California, MD, Dr. Hotchkiss, Dr. Pointer and Dr. Distefano help people avoid onychomycosis and treat it as necessary. Let them help you have clear nails.

How onychomycosis happens

The CDC says toenail fungus originates with the same micro-organism which causes itchy athlete's foot. Wear the same socks every day, neglect foot hygiene and go barefoot outside or in the gym locker room, and you encourage toenail fungus.

Additionally, some people have an inherited foot structure that leads to toenail fungus. Traumatic injury to the toe and wearing tight sneakers contribute, too.

How your podiatrist can help

At Southern Maryland Foot & Ankle in California, MD, our foot doctors diagnose fungal toenails by simple visual inspection. One or all toenails may be involved.

To treat the infection, your podiatrist may advise a topical anti-fungal cream, an oral anti-fungal pill or a combination of the two. The infection may take several weeks to months to resolve, and you must be consistent and persistent with the treatment your doctor prescribes. People with diabetes, poor peripheral circulation or compromised immune systems should be particularly careful to follow treatment plans.

How to prevent toenail fungus

  1. Wash your feet with soap and water every day, and dry them well with a clean towel.
  2. Use sharp clean clippers to trim your nails (straight across). Never share clippers with anyone else--even a family member.
  3. Wear clean, moisture-wicking socks every day.
  4. Avoid going barefoot, particularly out of doors, in the gym or poolside where fungus proliferates. Wear shower sandals or flip-flops, recommends Harvard Women's Health Watch.
  5. Apply an anti-fungal cream to your feet daily during warm weather if you tend to develop athlete's foot easily.
  6. Allow your athletic shoes to dry thoroughly before wearing them again. Alternate pairs of dress or casual shoes for your daily routines.
