Should You Call the Foot Doctor?

Most of us don’t look forward to a visit to the doctor. Usually, when something starts bothering us, we put it off, hope it will go away on its own or just outright ignore the symptoms. Unfortunately, that’s about the worst thing you can do. At Southern Maryland Foot & Ankle, we encourage our patients to get foot and ankle problems evaluated promptly. Why? In the majority of cases, early diagnosis and treatment can mean the difference between a medical issue that is resolved relatively quickly with conservative methods and a condition that has progressed to the point where there is a serious disability that requires extensive treatment or even surgery.

The best policy is “better safe than sorry.” Our helpful staff is always willing to answer your questions and will be able to tell you if there is anything you can do at home to treat what’s bothering you and when you should come in to have our board certified podiatrist, Dr. Larry Hotchkiss evaluate your condition. Patients with diabetes or peripheral arterial disease should inspect their feet daily and call immediately if any changes are noticed because even simple issues such as an ingrown toenail or a blister can quickly become a major medical threat. We urge all our patients to contact us if they notice any of the following:

  • Intense or intermittent but lasting pain in your toes, feet, ankles or lower leg
  • Burning, tingling or numbness anywhere on your foot
  • Decreased range of motion or difficulty bearing weight on your foot
  • Changes in the shape of your foot or the appearance of any growths or deformities in the structure of your toes or feet
  • Discoloration, thickening or crumbling toenails
  • Skin rashes, changes in temperature
  • Wounds, blisters or sores that don’t heal
  • Peeling and cracking skin on your feet or heel

With some podiatric conditions infection is a concern. If you notice red streaks, swelling accompanied by heat, pus or a fever, get in touch with our office immediately by calling (301) 868-3899.

We try to make it as convenient as possible for you to get all of your foot and ankle health concerns addressed. Both our Waldorf and Clinton offices offer early morning appointments and the Waldorf office has evening hours as well. So if you’re experiencing any issues with your toes, feet or ankles, contact us today for an appointment
