Dealing with Posterior Tibial Tendon Dysfunction

If you have noticed pain developing on the outer side of your foot or ankle along with swelling and tenderness in the middle of your foot, especially when you are doing an activity that involves pushing off, such as walking or running you may be experiencing a problem with your posterior tibial tendon. This tendon stretches from the calf, down the back of the ankle and all the way to the middle of the foot.  Posterior tibial tendon dysfunction (PTTD) occurs when this tendon is stretched beyond its normal range or torn and then becomes inflamed causing pain, discomfort and weakness in the arch of the foot and in the ankle.

Who is Prone to PTTD?

Overuse is the primary cause of PTTD but there are several other risk factors that increase the likelihood of developing this disorder, including:

  • Diabetes
  • Being overweight
  • Hypertension

If you are concerned that you might have an issue with your posterior tibial tendon, make an appointment at Southern Maryland Foot & Ankle and our board certified foot and ankle surgeon, Dr. Larry Hotchkisswill evaluate your condition. In addition to an examination and your medical history, the podiatrist may use digital x-rays (which can be done in either our Waldorf or Clinton office), MRI or ultrasound to help reach a diagnosis.

Treatment for PTTD in its early stages includes rest (possibly by immobilization), nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications and orthotics.

Don’t Delay

PTTD is a progressive disorder. Since this tendon is what helps support the arch of the foot, if allowed to progress, untreated PTTD can lead to fallen arches and flatfeet. Painful arthritis may set in as well. If you have any of the symptoms described above, request an appointment online or call us at (301) 868-3899 or (301) 843-9581 and take the steps necessary now to head off a serious and painful disability in the future.
