Can Orthotics Help You?

Orthotics or orthoses are defined as any device that gets inserted into your shoe. This includes padding, arch supports and inserts. Some basic varieties are available over the counter, but ones for more specific foot problems are custom made to fit an individual foot with a specific problem.

Conditions Improved with Orthotics

At Southern Maryland Foot & Ankle, we prescribe orthotics to fulfill several different functions. They can protect an area of the foot that is irritated or receiving excessive pressure due to a deformity such as a bunion or hammertoe. They can also help correct a defective foot structure in the way that arch supports can relieve plantar fasciitis by filling in for a weak or missing arch and thereby stopping the plantar fascia from being overstretched. Many other conditions can be helped with orthotics, including: sesamoiditis, arthritis, Achilles tendonitis, hallux limitus and Neuromas.

Although orthoses are made in variety of shapes and sizes, the fall into three main categories:

Rigid Orthotics: Made from a firm material like carbon or plastic from a mold of your foot, these are most often used to control the motion of the two major foot joints that are directly below the ankle. They are usually used in walking or dress shoes and can help reduce aches and pains in the lower back, thighs and legs.

Soft Orthotics: As the name implies, these orthotics are constructed of soft, cushiony material. Their primary purposes are to keep pressure off sore spots on the foot, absorb shock and increase balance. They are often worn on the sole of the foot and are made from a plaster or cast mold or one made from another image of the patient’s foot.

Semi-Rigid Orthotics: This type of orthotics is used by athletes, children who have flatfeet or abnormal toeing issues, as well as people who need more foot balance. Layers of soft material are reinforced with firmer materials to create them.

If you are wondering if orthotics may be helpful in treating a foot, toe or ankle condition that you have, make an appointment with our podiatrist, Larry Hotchkiss, D.P.M. in either our Clinton or Waldorf office by calling: (301) 868-3899 or (301) 843-9581 or request an appointment online.
