Arthritis and Your Feet

Arthritis is a disease that affects nearly 40 million Americans. It is characterized by an inflammation of the cartilage and lining of the joints, usually accompanied by swelling and increased fluid in the joints. Feet are a primary target for arthritis because each foot has 33 joints, and they have the job of bearing the weight of the entire body. There are two kinds of arthritis:

Osteoarthritis: This is the more common form of arthritis, sometimes referred to as “wear and tear arthritis” because it is the result of the breakdown in cartilage that comes with age. People who are overweight are more susceptible to this type of arthritis in their feet because of the additional strain of carrying the excess weight.

Rheumatoid arthritis: This is the most serious form of arthritis. It is actually a group of chronic inflammatory diseases that frequently affects smaller joints. In the foot, it attacks both ankles and toes.

At Southern Maryland Foot & Ankle, we believe that arthritis, like most disorders that affect the feet, is best treated when detected early. Be on the lookout for these symptoms that may indicate the beginnings of arthritis:

  • Stiffness of the joints, particularly first thing in the morning
  • Swelling in one or more joints
  • Pain and tenderness in the joints
  • Limited range of motion of toes, feet, or ankles
  • A feeling of heat in a joint
  • Skin changes, including redness, rashes, or growths on the feet

Treatment

There are several avenues of treatment for arthritis that are aimed both at reducing pain and discomfort and also slowing the progression of the disease. These include anti-inflammatory medication, steroid injections, physical therapy and exercise, and orthotics. After an appointment with our board certified podiatrist, Dr. Larry Hotchkiss, a custom treatment plan can be developed for you.

In many cases, if caught early, the detrimental effects of arthritis can be greatly reduced and the progression of the disease slowed. If you have symptoms of arthritis, contact either our Clinton or Waldorf office to set up a consultation or request an appointment online.
