What is Plantar Fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis is a painful condition that can take months to recover from. Without the right support in place, plantar fasciitis can become a chronic pain condition that decreases your overall mobility. At Southern Maryland Foot & Ankle, our treatment team includes a team of experienced podiatrists, who are ready to discuss your options when it comes to treatment for plantar fasciitis. If you live in California, Clinton, and Waldorf, MD, or the surrounding areas, we are ready to see you for an initial consultation in one of our three office settings.

What is Plantar Fasciitis?

Your plantar fascia is a band of tissue that is at the bottom of your foot, connecting your heel to your toes. When this fascia becomes inflamed because of an injury, significant pain can develop. The injury can occur over a period of time from wearing running shoes with poor support, or can come on suddenly after a long day spent on your feet. People who don't wear supportive shoes, are overweight, or who do any activity where your feet pound on the ground can get plantar fasciitis. If you have pain in your heels, or at the bottom of your feet that won't go away, it's time to see a podiatrist for further evaluation.

Treatment for Plantar Fasciitis in California, MD

Treatment for plantar fasciitis can be as simple as giving your feet rest, icing your feet, and doing some gentle stretches at home. If the pain in your feet is mild, it is possible that the plantar fasciitis will go away on its own. It can be difficult to treat plantar fasciitis when you are continuing to use your feet, despite the pain. You can try wearing braces at night that keep your feet in the position of stretching your plantar fascia, or work with a physical therapist to ease the strain on your feet. Custom orthotics can be used to give your feet the support you need when you are mobile. If your pain is not relieved using these methods, a podiatrist can use targeted cortisone shots to reduce the inflammation.
