How Orthotics Can Help Your Feet

Could your feet benefit from custom orthotics?

Most of us don’t have perfect feet. Certain foot structures can leave people prone to achy arches, heel pain and other problems. One way that our California, MD, podiatrists Dr. Larry Hotchkiss, Dr. Justin Pointer and Dr. Joseph DiStefano can combat these issues is by providing custom orthotics. Orthotics are a great way to not only treat foot and ankle problems that you are currently experiencing but also to prevent certain problems from happening in the first place.

What do orthotics do?

The types of orthotics that we provide to our patients here at our California, MD, practice are fully customized to support both the unique shape and structure of your foot, as well as address the specific issues you are dealing with. Orthotics are shoe inserts that are placed inside the shoes to provide additional support, stabilization and cushioning. They can also alleviate certain symptoms you are experiencing.

Who can benefit from orthotics?

Most people can benefit from wearing custom orthotics. Of course, there are certain people that may find it particularly beneficial. You should strongly consider getting orthotics if,

  • You have high arches or flat feet
  • You are on your feet more than five hours a day
  • You notice that your shoes wear out easily
  • You deal with a persistent foot or heel pain
  • You’re an athlete

Orthotics can help to soften the blow to your feet and ankles when standing, walking or running, making them ideal for runners and those who are physically active (you’d be surprised how much stress you put on your feet every time you pound the pavement or tackle that third set of box jumps).

Orthotics can also be used to reduce foot pain associated with certain conditions such as,

  • Diabetes
  • Tendonitis
  • Bunions
  • Neuromas
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Achilles tendonitis
  • Bursitis
  • Arthritis

What types of orthotics are available?

The two main types of orthotics are rigid and soft orthotics. Rigid orthotics can be great for people who are dealing with foot, ankle, leg and even lower back pain, while soft orthotics can help to take the pressure off certain areas of the foot to alleviate bunion pain, plantar fasciitis, achy arches and other sore areas.

If you are interested in getting custom orthotics here at our Waldorf, Clinton or California, MD, offices, don’t hesitate to call Southern Maryland Foot & Ankle at (301) 843-9581, (301) 868-3899 or (301) 690-6044 to learn more or to schedule an evaluation.
