Dealing with Plantar Fibroma

A plantar fibroma is a mass or cluster of masses that forms and implants itself into the plantar fascia, that long band of tissue that stretches along the bottom of your foot from your toes to you heel. Patients who come to Southern Maryland Foot & Ankle with plantar fibroma usually feel a small lump just under the skin in the arch of the foot. The good news is that plantar fibromas are not cancerous and initially, may not even be painful. The bad news is that plantar fibromas will not go away without treatment and will most likely increase in size causing pain as you walk and do other normal weight-bearing activities.

Treatment Options

Our board certified foot and ankle surgeon, Dr. Larry Hotchkiss will first need to confirm a diagnosis of plantar fibroma. This is important because masses in the arch of the foot may also be caused by a cyst, ruptured tendon, nerve or fat tumor, infection or a foreign object in the foot. In addition to examining your foot and taking a complete medical history the foot doctor will probably order x-rays or other imaging studies. There are a number of non-invasive treatment options for plantar fibroma: anti-inflammatory medications, steroid injections, physical therapy and orthotic inserts for footwear. Although these measures will not eliminate the fibroma they can shrink it and decrease pressure to the affected area. If these methods do not bring pain relief, the podiatrist may recommend surgery.

Since doctors don’t really know what causes plantar fibromas (although it is thought to possibly be hereditary), there are no specific ways of preventing them. However, wearing well-fitting shoes that provide overall good support to your foot is always helpful for optimal foot health.

Any time you find a lump in your foot, you should contact our Waldorf or Clinton office. Stop little problems from becoming large podiatric issues by dealing with them promptly. For more information or to schedule an appointment, call us at (301) 868-3899 or (301) 843-9581.
