Tips for Healthy Feet for Diabetic Patients

It is estimated by the American Diabetes Association that 15.7 million people in the United States have diabetes. Diabetes poses significant risks to foot health for a few reasons. One major complication of the disease is damage to the nervous system, also called neuropathy. Patients with neuropathy have decreased sensation in their feet and therefore do not always immediately detect a cut or injury to the foot. A second factor working against the diabetic patient is that the disease causes circulatory problems, decreasing blood flow, which greatly slows down the healing process. For a diabetic patient, even a slight cut or blister can quickly become a serious health concern. At Southern Maryland Foot & Ankle our podiatrists, Larry Hotchkiss, DPM and Gregory Cardinal, DPM and our caring staff believe that a partnership between the diabetic patient and the podiatrist is the best defense against serious foot problems. We have board certified foot doctors on staff with over 20 years experience dealing with diabetic foot issues. Below are some ways you can help keep your feet healthy:

  • Inspect your feet daily. Look for puncture wounds, bruises, pressure areas, redness, warmth, blisters, ulcers, scratches, cuts and nail problems. To be sure you’re not missing anything, ask someone to help you, or use a mirror.
  • Keep your feet warm and dry.
  • Don’t smoke—it restricts blood vessels and further reduces blood flow to the feet.
  • Avoid sitting cross legged as that also decreases blood supply to your feet.
  • Buy comfortable shoes that don’t require “breaking in.” Shoes should not rub anywhere; check the sides, back, toes, heels for no feeling of pressure or friction when choosing shoes. Avoid pointed shoes and high heels. Don’t lace shoes too tightly.
  • Trim toenails straight across and don’t cut the corners. Do not use any sharp instruments on your feet. Absolutely no “bathroom surgeries!”
  • Moisturize your feet daily with a good quality lotion. Do not put lotion between your toes.
  • Wash your feet every day with mild soap and warm water. Dry immediately after washing by patting each foot with a towel and carefully drying between your toes.

In addition to the above suggestions, be sure to contact our Clinton or Waldorf office immediately if you notice any cuts, swelling, redness, or other changes to your feet. With proper diabetic foot care in place, Southern Maryland Foot & Ankle can help you safeguard your feet.
