If the Shoe Fits

Did you know that the single biggest preventative step you can take to avoid common foot disorders and to keep existing conditions from worsening is to wear properly fitted footwear? At Southern Maryland Foot & Ankle we believe so strongly in the importance of good quality, good fitting shoes that we have a shoe store at both our Clinton and Waldorf offices where trained professionals will help you get the right shoe for your foot. Shoes that are poorly made or that do not fit properly can cause corns, calluses, bunions, hammertoes, and several other disabling foot problems.

Shoe Shopping 101

Our podiatrists, Dr. Larry Hotchkiss and Dr. Gregory Cardinal want you to be informed consumers when it comes to picking footwear because your feet depend on it—now and in the future. When shopping for footwear, choose shoes and sneakers that are appropriate for the activity you plan to use them for. Also, look for shoes that are appear to be durable in their construction in order to provide maximum protection and comfort for your feet.

Here are some other tips to keep in mind to ensure the best fit:

  • Try on shoes at the end of the day. That’s when your feet are their largest and most swollen.
  • Be sure to try on both shoes and to walk around in them to make sure they fit comfortably with no rubbing.
  • Have your foot professionally measured periodically. Your foot size increases as you get older.
  • Do not buy shoes that feel too tight. You should not endure a “breaking in” period.
  • Most people have one foot that’s larger than the other. Make sure the new shoes fit your largest foot.
  • Avoid heels that are higher than 2 inches. The higher the heels, the more pressure under the ball of the foot and the more cramped the toe boxes—both conditions that lead to multiple foot problems.
  • Make sure that there is a half-inch of space from the end of your longest toe to the end of the shoe. When the shoe is on your foot, you should be able to wriggle all your toes freely.

If you have additional questions about fitting shoes properly or any other foot or ankle concerns, contact our Clinton or Waldorf office today. Our helpful staff is ready to assist you.
