How to Prevent 5 Summer Foot Problems

Hot days and summer activities bring patients to our Waldorf and Clinton offices  at Southern Maryland Foot & Ankle with a host of foot problems. Here are some of the more common ones and what you can do to prevent them:

  1. Swollen feet and ankles: hot weather can cause ankles and feet to swell, especially if you have been on them for long periods of time or you are pregnant. Although it may be the opposite of what you would think, drinking lots of fluids actually helps rid your body of excess water and can reduce swelling. Elevating your feet for a period of time will also help.

  2. Foot odor: to minimize stinky feet issues, be sure to practice good foot hygiene by washing feet daily and drying them completely. Choose socks that wick moisture away from the skin and try a foot powder to help keep feet dry. Rotate your footwear so shoes have a chance to air out between wearings.

  3. Blisters: long hikes or an afternoon of outlet shopping can leave you with a blister because sweat increases friction, causing your footwear to rub on your foot and create an irritation. Be sure that shoes fit properly and use mole skin to cover a sore spot to prevent a blister from forming.

  4. Ankle sprains: impromptu barbecue volleyball and softball games can end in ankle sprains if you are not prepared. If you’re going to play, make sure you have a pair of supportive sneakers and don’t overdo it if you are not in shape.

  5. Sunburn: yes you can get it on the top and bottom of your feet. Apply sunscreen and reapply after swimming to prevent. You’ll also be reducing your risk of skin cancer on your feet and ankles.

If these or other foot issues are causing you pain or discomfort, make an appointment to see our board certified foot and ankle surgeon, Dr. Larry Hotchkiss by calling (301) 868-3899 or (301) 843-9581.
