Foot Care Tips for Seniors

Aging impacts your feet just as it does the rest of your body. Some changes that occur as you get older include deterioration of joints and cartilage, loss of fat pads, decrease in circulation and loss of suppleness in skin and nails. There is some good news however—you can take steps now that will help protect the health of your feet. At Southern Maryland Foot & Ankle Care our board certified podiatrist, Dr. Larry Hotchkiss, is your partner in caring for your feet and ankles and ensuring an active lifestyle for years to come. Here are some suggestions to maximize foot health and prevent problems:

  • Get in the habit of checking your feet daily for unusual bumps or sores, changes in color or temperature, and any other abnormalities. If you are unable to clearly see all parts of your foot, ask a family member to help you.
  • Avoid going barefoot to prevent injuries and fungal infections.
  • Wash feet daily and dry thoroughly. Apply a good quality moisturizer to keep feet hydrated and prevent skin from drying and cracking.
  • Keep toenails trimmed short (but not too short) and straight across to reduce the chance of ingrown toenails.
  • Choose shoes that are good quality and fitted properly to your foot. Do not wear shoes that rub or press anywhere on your foot to prevent bunions, corns and calluses.
  • Do not expose your feet to cold temperatures for prolonged periods of time.
  • Maintain good blood circulation to your feet by putting your feet up when you are sitting or lying down, not sitting for long periods of time (especially with your legs crossed), and not smoking
  • Schedule regular exams with your podiatrist.

Problems with your feet may be a tip off to several serious medical conditions, such as diabetes, arthritis, circulatory and nerve disorders. If you have any questions or concerns about changes you’ve noticed in your feet, make an appointment at either our Waldorf or Clinton office and let us help you develop a healthy foot care routine.
