Abnormal Growths in the Foot

You don’t often hear about cancer of the foot but there are types of cancer that can occur with your feet. There are also other abnormal growths that develop in the feet that are benign but still may require attention. At Southern Maryland Foot & Ankle we urge our patients to be vigilant and proactive in checking their feet regularly for any changes or abnormalities. Here are a few conditions to be aware of:

Osteochondromas—these make up about half of all benign bone tumors found in the foot. They occur under the toenail, most often in young adults and children. In most cases, they are not very painful, although they can lead to an ingrown toenail.

Giant cell tumors—despite the scary name, these benign tumors form in the tendon sheath and are usually found on the top or sides of the foot or the toes. Sometimes they grow deep inside the foot. Depending on their position, giant cell tumors can cause pain and discomfort.

Plantar fibroma—this benign growth develops on the plantar fascia, the thick band of tissue that runs along the bottom of your foot. The plantar fascia is constantly being stretched when you walk and a plantar fibroma can be painful. Orthotics can help shift pressure away from the fibroma and bring relief but there are times when removing the fibroma surgically is necessary.

Neoplastic disorders—these tumors signal abnormal tissue growth and can be either benign or malignant.

Malignant melanoma—this form of cancer is extremely dangerous if not caught and treated early. Approximately 30 percent of melanomas are found in the lower extremities of the body.

Many times, patients put off visiting the foot doctor if they detect a lump or mass in their foot but this can allow a condition to progress and make treatment more difficult. Our board certified foot and ankle surgeon, Larry Hotchkiss, DPM will be able to end the worry by diagnosing the mass and helping you get treatment if necessary.  If you have noticed any changes in your feet, toes or ankles, make an appointmentat our Clinton or Waldorf office and let us help you find answers to your foot problems.
